Impulse Variables, Vortex Dipoles and Applications

چکیده
A Lagrangian numerical method based on impulse variables is analyzed. The relation between impulse vectors and vortex dipoles with a prescribed dipole moment is presented and used to adapt the high-accuracy cutoo functions of vortex methods for use in impulse-based methods. The long-time implementation of the impulse method is shown to contain a source of error whose growth in time renders impulse methods impractical for use in interior ows. Applications for which impulse methods are well suited are identiied.

متن کاملA Vortex/Impulse Method for ImmersedBoundary Motion in High ReynoldsNumber Flows
A Lagrangian method that combines vortices and impulse elements (vortex dipoles) is introduced. The applications addressed are flows induced by the motion of thin flexible boundaries immersed in a two-dimensional incompressible fluid. The impulse elements are attached to the boundaries and are used to account for the forces affecting the motion. The vortices occupy a region surrounding the boun...
متن کاملAbelian Higgs Model as an Ensemble of Vortex Loops
In the London limit of the Ginzburg-Landau theory (Abelian Higgs model), vortex dipoles (small vortex loops) are treated as a grand canonical ensemble in the dilute gas approximation. The summation over these objects with the most general rotationand translation invariant measure of integration over their shapes leads to effective Sine-Gordon theories of the dual fields. The representations of ...

متن کاملAnisotropic and long-range vortex interactions in two-dimensional dipolar Bose gases.
We perform a theoretical study into how dipole-dipole interactions modify the properties of superfluid vortices within the context of a two-dimensional atomic Bose gas of co-oriented dipoles. The reduced density at a vortex acts like a giant antidipole, changing the density profile and generating an effective dipolar potential centred at the vortex core whose most slowly decaying terms go as 1/...
